The nature of the molecular gas system in the core of NGC 1275

چکیده
We present near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of the central kiloparsec of NGC 1275 at the heart of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, obtained with the UIST IFU on UKIRT. The nuclear ro-vibrational H 2 emission is spatially resolved and is likely to originate approximately 50 pc from the active nucleus. The Paα emission is, by contrast, spatially unresolved. The requirements for thermal excitation of the H 2 by nuclear X-radiation, its kinematics on sub-arcsec scales, and its stability against self-gravity, together suggest that the observed H 2 is part of clumpy disk rotating about the radio-jet axis. The sharp jump in the H 2 velocity across the nucleus implies a black hole mass of 3.4 × 10 8 M ⊙ , with a systematic error of ±0.18 dex due to the uncertainty in the radio jet inclination. This agrees well with the value implied by the empirical correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion for nearby elliptical galaxies, and is ∼ 100 times the stellar mass in this region.

On the Nature of the NGC 1275 System
Sub-arcsecond images, taken in B, R, and Hα filters, and area spectroscopy obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope provide the basis for an investigation of the unusual structures in the stellar body and ionized gas in and around the Perseus cluster central galaxy, NGC 1275. Our Hα filter is tuned to gas at the velocity of NGC 1275, revealing complex, probably unresolved, small-scale features in...

متن کاملObservations of CO in the eastern filaments of NGC 1275
We recently found extended CO(2–1) emission from cold molecular gas embedded in the network of Hα filaments surrounding the galaxy NGC 1275 (Salome et al. 2006). We now present CO(2–1) interferometer maps of the eastern filaments, at high spatial and spectral resolutions. The cold molecular gas is detected by the Plateau de Bure Interferometer along the eastern filaments over an extent of 15′′,...
متن کاملSCUBA Observations of NGC 1275
Deep SCUBA observations of NGC 1275 at 450μm and 850μm along with the application of deconvolution algorithms have permitted us to separate the strong core emission in this galaxy from the fainter extended emission around it. The core has a steep spectral index and is likely due primarily to the AGN. The faint emission has a positive spectral index and is clearly due to extended dust in a patch...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in the Perseus Cooling Flow Galaxy , NGC 1275
The central arcminute of the Perseus cooling flow galaxy, NGC 1275, has been mapped with the JCMT in CO(2–1) at 21 resolution, with detections out to at least 36 (12 kpc). Within the limits of the resolution and coverage, the distribution of gas appears to be roughly E-W, consistent with previous observations of CO, X-ray, Hα, and dust emission. The total detected molecular hydrogen mass is ∼ 1...
